HD Executive Director David Harland was appointed to the United Nations High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation, established in mid-September 2017 by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.

He will join Mr Jean-Marie Guéhenno, a member of HD’s Foundation Board, who was also appointed.

The High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation seeks to provide the Secretary-General with advice on mediation initiatives as well as support specific mediation efforts around the world.

Its creation will give priority to the UN’s prevention and mediation work and should allow it to work more effectively with regional organisations, non-governmental groups and others involved in mediation around the world.

See the UN press release here.

The Advisory Board is composed of 18 personalities, including global leaders, senior officials and renowned experts, who will bring expertise, skills and relevant contacts in mediation and diplomacy.

It includes, among others, Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile; Leymah Gbowee, 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate; Ramtane Lamamra, former Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs (2013-2017); Graça Machel, former Minister of Education in Mozambique and an international advocate for women’s and Children’s rights; Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria (1999-2007); and José Manuel Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former Head of the State of Timo-Leste.
