The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) is a private diplomacy organisation founded on the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence. HD operates in more than 40 countries with over 300 employees. The largest private diplomacy organisation working to address conflict globally, HD is seeking a Director of its Asia programme. HD is engaged in all of Asia’s major conflicts and enjoys relationships of trust with conflict parties throughout the region. The rich portfolio includes work on reducing violence in sub-national conflicts, dialogue to mitigate crises at the national level and a growing array of inter-state engagements involving major powers, including China.
HD is a global mediation actor with a mandate to prevent, mitigate and resolve violent conflict. The Asia programme is managed from a regional office in Singapore and oversees projects and country offices across East and Southeast Asia with a staff of more than forty people. The role of the Asia Director is to provide leadership and inspiration for a talented team of mostly national staff in Asia.
Specifically, this involves:
The successful candidate would be expected to develop and build the China programme further, to continue strengthening the funding base for Asia activities, and to expand the programme into new directions as conflict trends dictate. She/He must demonstrate a combination of diplomatic skills, understanding of mediation and peacemaking, as well as deep knowledge of Asia. Ideally she/he would have more than twenty years of experience in Asia working as a mediator or in a related field, speak one or more Asian language, and demonstrate an ability for networking at senior levels.
The position will report to the Executive Director in Geneva, and will be based in Singapore.
