The conflict between Darfur opposition movements and the Government of Sudan (GoS) and its allied militias has resulted in one of the worst humanitarian crises the world has seen in decades. More than 2.5 million people have been internally displaced and more than 200,000 refugees have crossed into Chad as a result of fighting.
The HD Centre has been involved in Darfur since April 2003 to help address the dire humanitarian situation in the region. Since 2008, activities have focused on providing opportunities for dialogue with the belligerents in Darfur on humanitarian issues.
In 2009, the HD Centre expanded its work to support parties the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, signed between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement in southern Sudan in 2005.
