Myanmar : Activities

  • HD Centre continues to press the case for dialogue and compromise
The HD Centre continues to press the case for dialogue and compromise between the different sides, so that all key actors and stakeholders can have genuine input in determining Myanmar's  political future and government.  Aware that the Government's road map, if it is to be a point of engagement, must be adapted for  inclusive political consensus, the HD Centre is currently taking soundings on what might be the terms for a new approach.
  • HD Centre provides informal strategic advice
The HD Centre provides informal, strategic advice to UN and other international actors in order to sharpen international focus and support for change in Myanmar.  Following the September crackdown, the HD Centre organised a small meeting of experts in Bangkok to consider a framework for an inclusive process of change based on the  Government's road map which was submitted to Ibrahim Gambari, UN Special Adviser for Myanmar ahead of his mission to the country in November. The HD Centre regularly briefs representatives of the international community on the situation. Now based in Bangkok, the HD Centre's Representative, has relatively easy access to senior officials in the region and from elsewhere, recently meeting with Bernard Kouchner, the French Foreign Minister; Piero Fassino, the EU Special Envoy to Myanmar; and Christopher Hill, the US Assistant Secretary of State. In December 2007, the HD Centre attended an informal workshop in Jakarta to discuss ways in which the road map might be modified in order to build real bridges for change.
