Introduction

Since 1976, the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) has been fighting for an independent state in Aceh, Indonesia. The conflict has raged on and off during this time and more than 12,000 people have been killed, thousands displaced, and homes, schools and public facilities destroyed.

In 1999, the HD Centre initiated the first ever dialogue process between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia (GOI) and the leadership of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). From 2000 to 2003, the HD Centre was officially responsible for facilitating the peace process between representatives from both sides.

Activities

  • Support to the parties after the December 2004 Tsunami
    On 26 December 2004, a devastating tsunami destroyed Aceh's western coastline and much of the capital Banda Aceh. more
  • Tokyo Joint Council
    In April 2003, faced with a general deterioration in the security situation in Aceh and the problems in implementing the demilitarization plan, a Joint Council (JC) was called upon. More
