The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (the HD Centre) is an independent and impartial organisation, based in Geneva, Switzerland, dedicated to improving the global response to conflict.

It attempts to achieve this by undertaking and promoting action to prevent and resolve armed conflicts through tailor-made support to peace processes, and by contributing to the improvement of the practice of mediation and the strengthening of capacity within the wider community of practitioners.

Internships

The HD Centre is willing to offers students an opportunity to acquire direct exposure and allow them to contribute to the organisation’s work through unpaid internships.

When internship positions become available, the HD centre will give preference to students undertaking degrees in political science, international relations, peace and conflict, human rights, humanitarian law or equivalent. Eligible candidates must also be fluent in English.

Knowledge in pre- and post-conflict situations, conflict resolution and peacemaking, with experience in researching, analysing and writing on political contexts will be strongly favoured.

Inclusion Adviser

The HD Centre is currently looking for an Inclusion Adviser to join its Policy and Mediation Support team in Geneva.

Reporting to the Director of Policy and Mediation Support, the responsibilities of the Inclusion Adviser will be as follows: 

  • In close collaboration with the Regional Directors and the project teams, develop strategies for strengthening the inclusion and contributions of women, civil society and other relevant stakeholders in the HD Centre’s mediation and policy work.
  • Assess the status of the inclusion of women, gender and women’s rights in HD Centre’s projects; examine opportunities as well as obstacles for further inclusion; and, devise approaches to address these obstacles.
  • Offer general advice to staff across the organisation, including regional and country offices, on project and process design specifically as it relates to the inclusion and contributions of relevant actors in peacemaking, peace-building and peace implementation strategies. 
  • Contribute to the development of strategies for further inclusion of women, civil society and other relevant actors in peace processes by holding in-house seminars and brainstorming sessions with staff in various locations; drafting concept notes to inform the discussions and policy development within the organisation; drafting notes to share with the HD Centre’s counterparts at a country level.
  • As needed, meet with the HD Centre’s national counterparts and deliver trainings to discuss various options for inclusion.
  • Work closely with the HD Centre’s Monitoring and Evaluation Manager to develop a rigorous internal approach to evaluate the impact of the HD Centre’s projects on inclusion; contribute to donor reporting and fundraising, as needed. 
  • Participate in policy discussions through publications, participation in relevant multilateral and bilateral processes; contribute to seminars and conferences, and liaise with relevant actors involved in peacemaking and peace-building policy and practice.

Qualifications: The successful candidate should have an advanced university degree, including studies in international relations, gender and women’s rights and at least ten years of work experience in an international environment. S/he must have demonstrable expertise in peace process design and in the area of women’s rights and gender as well as field experience in peace-building, political affairs or mediation.  Required knowledge includes: international peace and security issues, the United Nations (UN) and conflict mediation, women’s rights, understanding of peace processes and inclusion issues.

Skills: The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, possess experience of public speaking and representation, demonstrate a record of initiative and creativity as well as confidence in dealing with senior practitioners. S/he should be flexible and able to work under time constraints and to manage multiple projects at the same time. Knowledge of other languages is desirable.

Grant management and reporting Assistant

Temporary position (17 months with possibility of extension)

The HD Centre is seeking to recruit, a Grant management and reporting Assistant to join its Middle East and North Africa (MENA) team in Geneva as of 1 June 2013. S/he will manage the donor grants and related finance and administration operations of the MENA programme.

The Grant management and reporting Assistant will have the following responsibilities:

  • Preparing budgets and budget amendments.
  • Comparing and classifying expenses per/with budget lines.
  • Overseeing procurement procedures.
  • Working together with and overseeing staff from local field offices on cash transfers, general book-keeping, etc…
  • Preparing consultancy contracts (management, oversight, control of payments and control of supporting documents).
  • Liaising with donors, auditors and the HD Centre’s Finance department on the programme’s budget and donor contracts.
  • Maintaining project documentation and supporting the team on any related administrative tasks as required.

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria:

  • 3 years of relevant financial and administrative experience; experience in non-profit sector is essential.
  • Degree in finance, accounting or a related field.
  • Fluency in English with very good working knowledge of French.
  • Experience in managing donor grants, especially European Union grants would be an asset.
  • Experience in managing administrative, logistics and Human Resources tasks.
  • Flexibility in reassigning priorities and at ease in a changing environment.
  • Prepared to travel to field offices if needed.
