Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue

The HD Centre in Asia

The HD Centre has a long track record in Asia. Its first mediation projects were in Myanmar and Aceh, Indonesia in 1999. Since then, its mediation work has broadened to include several conflicts in the region, most of which are confidential.

The HD Centre's Asia regional office is located in Singapore. It supports more than a dozen confidential and public projects focused on mediation and peacemaking around Asia. The purpose of this regional presence is to develop useful networks and to implement the HD Centre's strategy to address conflict, strengthen the broader mediation community and reduce the humanitarian consequences of violent conflict through these projects. Overall, the HD Centre's work in Asia focuses on mediation while continuing with mediation support and violence reduction efforts.

The HD Centre disseminates lessons learnt from its own work and that of others in Asia through the biennial Oslo forum regional mediators' retreats. These meetings have been conducted in partnership with the China Institute of International Studies in Beijing, the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam in Hanoi.

Through an Asia-wide "Women at the Table" project, the HD Centre is working to promote the active inclusion of both women and gender concerns in mediation activities. We are also advising governments on the framing of related National Action Plans.

The HD Centre also partners with local organisations and institutions to build sustainability and local ownership of peace processes in the Philippines.

The Asia Office is led by the Regional Director, Michael Vatikiotis, with the support of nine full-time staff in Singapore and the Philippines as well as eight full-time consultants based across Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines.

The Asia Regional office enjoys financial support from the Economic Development Board of Singapore.
