Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue

The HD Centre in Africa

The HD Centre has been active in Africa since 2001, notably in Sudan, Chad, Burundi and the Central African Republic. In 2007, the HD Centre established a permanent presence with a regional office in Nairobi, Kenya.

The purpose of this regional presence in Africa is to develop useful networks and to implement the HD Centre's strategy to address conflict, strengthen the broader mediation community and reduce the humanitarian consequences of violent conflict.

This presence has allowed the organisation to expand its portfolio of projects in Africa.  These have included support to Kofi Annan during the Kenya National Dialogue and Reconciliation process in 2008; advice and support to the Somalia Djibouti peace process; developing electoral dispute resolution mechanisms for the 2010 Somaliland elections; developing regional activities to promote the inclusion of women and of gender issues in mediation processes; and expanding the HD Centre's operations in Sudan to include work on the Popular Consultations in the Blue Nile and Southern Kordofan States.

The HD Centre highlights and disseminates lessons learnt from its own work in Africa and that of others at the biennial Oslo forum regional mediator's retreats. These have been conducted in partnership with the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation in Tanzania.

The Africa Regional Office is headed by the Regional Director, Ambassador Hiruy Amanuel, and includes a Senior Programme Manager, a Project Manager, a Project Officer, administrative staff as well as experts and consultants dealing with particular issues. The HD Centre's Senior Adviser for Africa, David Lambo, is also an essential part of the team.
